United States Army Company B, 2d Battalion (Airborne), 8th Cavalry
Award: Silver Star
Date Action: 24 July 1968
Reason: For gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Private First Class De La Rosa distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action of 24 July 1968, while serving as a gunner with Company B, 2d Battalion (Airborne), 8th Cavalry during a combat mission near Quang Tri, Republic of Vietnam. When his unit was overrun by a large enemy force, Private First Class De La Rosa played dead until the enemy passed his position then set off two claymore mines killing several enemy soldiers. Disregarding his own safety, Private First Class De La Rosa then covered the rest of his unit until they reached a secure position. Upon hearing a comrade yelling for help, he exposed himself to the hostile fire to carry the wounded soldier to safety. His gallant action is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
